What is an IP address? it's the unique identifier given by your internet service provider to the computer your connecting from, or if there are many computers at your location, then the IP address will be the connection point AKA router used to split the connection.

This is what people can know if they find your IP address:

Your internet service provider you're using.
Your country.
Your city or general area. (depends on how your ISP labels/runs your internet connection)
If you are connecting with a static IP they even may be able to determine what business you're connecting from and if you have a static IP they will know how to get to your computer/router every time it's online unless your computer/router is protected with firewall/smart security settings to not respond to any incoming requests.

In addition to this personal information if they are hackers or using tools they can:

Try to scan your computer/router for openings to hack.
Try to use computer attacks to manipulate, overthrow, or incapacitate your computer/router.
Try to use deception to infect your computer with malicious software.

See for yourself, your own IP: http://whatismyipaddress.com/

Also check on the "hiding my IP" section about proxies and VPNs....
http://whatismyipaddress.com/hide-ip

Also read about changing your IP: http://whatismyipaddress.com/change-ip

IF YOU DONT USE PROXY OR VPN, EVERY WEBSITE YOU CONNECT TO, OR SERVICE YOU USE, HAS YOUR IP ADDRESS!!!!

IF YOU DO USE A PROXY ONLY THE PROXY SERVICE YOU USE HAS YOUR IP ADDRESS!!!

USING A VPN, you connect to another computer using encrypted tunnel..... you know use that computer as if you were sitting at it.... so any website you goto through VPN, looks like you are coming from that individual computer.

VPNs are useful when sites block PROXY connections or refuse service based on PROXY!!! But you need a trusted partner to VPN with..... because whoever you VPN with, will also have your IP ADDRESS! DO NOT GET YOUR VPN PARTNER IN TROUBLE BY DOING ILLEGAL/RISKY THINGS USING THEIR COMPUTER!!!!

Note: if you try to use an IP website to check your own IP, and you are using PROXY or VPN, you will instead get the IP of your PROXY or VPN, and not your own IP.

Well ! I would like to add some points about ip address :

An IP address is an Internet Protocol address. It is used to identify all the websites on the internet. Each IP address is unique and it is separated by periods. For example : 124.2.3.5 . It ranges from 0 to 255. Each and every website have an IP address. For example, an IP address for Google.com is 216.239.59.147 and that is how the internet identifies it. Generally, ip address is very difficult to remember by the visitors. So, they type domain name ( google.com/yahoo.com etc ) in the browser and it is converted to the destination address . This conversion process is done by DNS ( Domain name system / Domain Name Server ). There are two types of ip addresses:
1. Private Ip address
2. Public Ip address
Private ip address is also known as internal ip of your computer. To get the ip address of a computer use the following steps:
start->run->cmd-> ipconfig
or
start->run->cmd->ipconfig/all    It shows your internal ip address. Public or external ip address is used to access the internet. To determine your public ip address visit the site Ip-details.com   .

WOT

sarva.jjb, no offence, but is it not important to point out that not all sites where you can check your public IP address are trustworthy?  WOT (Web of Trust) is an add-on which you can apply to most common browsers which will give you a hint, whether a site is trustworthy or not.  I would recommend to check this as carefully with utility sites, such as ip checkers, as with any other site.  The WOT rating for
http://whatismyipaddress.com/ proposed by SylvanRanger is all "green", while the WOT rating for ip-details.com is "amber" (and the "red" as regards the privacy rating).  Draw your own conclusions from that.
